Inspired by the true story of the Kray twins, Legend directed by Brian Helgeland (42, A Knight’s Tale) is a glamorous, violent portrayal of the gangsters short ruling of London in the 1960s. As i’m sure you already know, both Ron and Reggie Kray are portrayed by Tom Hardy (Locke, Mad Max: Fury Road). This was the main selling point of the film for me and I was not disappointed with his performance as it was absolutely brilliant. 10 minutes into the Legend I forgot it was even the same actor playing both roles.
Other than Tom Hardy’s performance however, I found Legend pretty disappointing as a film. I found Reggie Kray’s wife; Frankie portrayed by Emily Browning (Sleeping Beauty, God Help the Girl) an underdeveloped character despite being the main focus of the film. There was also a heavy use of voiceover by Browning’s character which fell into the telling instead of showing technique which I thought distracted from the story and threw off the pace of the film.
I would say that Legend is worth watching for Tom Hardy’s performance alone but other than that, it was pretty forgettable.
